Iron supplements: Avoid these foods…..

In this pandemic – covid 19 you are worried about

your immunity. To raise your immunity, you are trying hard.

Examples- taking supplements like multivitamin, calcium tablets,

vitamin-D tablets, B-complex tablet or iron tablets. Either

you are taking these tablets on your own or under

doctor prescription. If you are taking under your doctor consultation

then it is OK. It is always better to get your

iron from food. But if your doctor had prescribed you

iron tablets, then read this blog till end. Thist is for you….

Iron tablets work better on empty stomach. But

if you have problems of nausea, stomach cramps or

diarrhea, then it is better to take it after little food.

Along with your Iron tablets, there are few foods you should avoid:

1)Fiber: avoid high fiber food with iron supplements such as-

  • Whole grains
  • Raw veggies
  • Bran

These foods are good for health. Just you need to

avoid taking them with your iron supplement at least

  • hours before and after.

2)Caffeine or tannin: Avoid foods or drinks which contains caffeine

Or tannin with iron supplements. They block your iron absorption.

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Cold drink

3)Milk, calcium supplements and antacids: avoid taking

your iron supplement along with milk, calcium supplements,

and antacids as it interferes in the absorption of iron.

If your iron level is still not improving even after

taking the supplements, getting a therapeutic consultation from

a qualified dietitian may help.
