Myth: You Can Have As Much Popcorn As You Want As It Is Not Fried.

Myth: you can have as much popcorn as you want as it is not fried.

Frequently asked question by my patients-

“Mam can I eat popcorn whenever I want?

As they are less in calories & I love popcorn very much.

But let me tell you that anything in large quantity will

put on calories to your plate. Let us understand it with a real life example-

  • 50 g of potato chips contains 268 calories. You know this so, you avoid it.
  • You think that if you take fat-free snacks like pop-corn, you don’t

need to worry about the calories and you even can have them as

much as you want.

Reality:

If you have a big bowl of popcorn (100g) just because it is not fried, at

the end you are getting:

  • 100g microwave popped popcorn has 584 calories that is

2.2 times more calories as compared to 50g of potato chips

  • 100g oil popped popcorn has 500 calories that is 1.8 times more

Calories as compared to 50g of potato chips.

  • 100g air popped popcorn has 388 calories that is 1.5 times

more calories as compared to 50g of potato chips.

So, the truth is this:

Portion size of your food is equally important as the type of the food

Be cautious if you are eating popcorn just for time pass especially

while watching TV or your web series. If you are doing work from home.

you feel like eating something too frequently even

though you are not hungry. And this is the time you think that you can have

popcorn as much as you want. But be careful- anything in large quantity

is not good for you. You should eat only when you are really hungry and not

just for time pass.

Consult your qualified dietitian for a customized diet plan to

know about the right QUALITY, QUANTITY & TIMING of your food.
