The link in between too much of turmeric intake and your iron deficiency
Turmeric is a well-known Asian spice used in cooking and
it is also used as medicine. And yes! We all know what
are the health benefits of turmeric.
- This corona pandemic has made this spice more
popular than ever.
- As a result, people have started using it directly
in large quantity or its supplements like capsules
without knowing its recommended dose and its duration of use.
- I have seen people taking turmeric water or
turmeric milk three times a day and that also in large quantity at a time.
But do you know that – too much of turmeric intake can lead to
Iron deficiency anaemia?
Reason-
- Curcumin present in turmeric binds ferric iron &
reduces the synthesis of ferritin & hepcidin in your liver.
And thus, it does not allow iron to get absorbed in your body
leading to iron deficiency anaemia.
- Any medicine (even in Ayurveda) or herbs in large
quantity without expert advice will be harmful.
Turmeric is well known for its anti-inflammatory effects but
taking too much can harm you. Always remember-
Moderation is the key!
